During the week of July 29-Aug. 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, six; Puna, three; Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 665 DUI arrests compared to 667 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.3 percent.
There have been 561 major accidents so far this year compared to 751 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25.3 percent.
To date there have been 14 official traffic fatalities. There have also been two Big Island highway deaths that police don’t count toward the official total because one occurred in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the cause of the other was ruled a medical condition. There were 20 official traffic fatalities at the same time last year.
This represents a decrease of 30 percent for official traffic fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
