During the week of July 22-28, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Kohala, six; South Hilo, five; Puna, four; Kona, two; and North Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 645 DUI arrests compared to 653 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.2%.
There have been 542 major accidents so far this year compared to 730 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25.8%.
To date, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities compared to 20 fatalities during the same time period last year, a decrease of 30%.
In addition, there are two roadway deaths not counted toward the official total, one because a medical condition was found to be the cause, the other because it occurred within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
