KEALAKEKUA — A preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday for a 19-year-old Naalehu woman accused of stabbing a woman to death and seriously injuring a man in Ka‘u last week.
Kaleianuenue Borero-Kaluna appeared Monday in Kona District Court on charges of attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. Charges stem from a stabbing at Whittington Beach Park in Naalehu on Friday afternoon that left 35-year-old Marie Lyn Boyles dead and 36-year-old Matthew Mark Guba hospitalized.
The attempted first-degree murder charge carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole upon conviction. The second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder charges both carry mandatory sentences of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole upon conviction.
Deputy Public Defender Ann Datta asked the court to grant Borero-Kaluna supervised release — which doesn’t require bail — against the recommendation of the Department of Public Safety’s Intake Service Center, or to reduce Borero-Kaluna’s bail.
“She is eight months pregnant and she has extensive family support,” Datta said.
Deputy Prosecutor Stephen Frye argued for bail to be adjusted to the charges listed.
“Theses offenses are serious and she is a flight risk,” he said.
Datta agreed the charges were serious, adding Borero-Kaluna has a place to live if she is released.
Judge Margaret Masunaga reduced Borero-Kaluna’s bail from $200,000 to $150,000.
Police responded to the reported stabbing at about 3:40 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, officers found the two victims with multiple stab wounds.
Boyles died at the scene, police said. Guba was taken to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition, but his condition was later upgraded to stable. A woman who answered the phone at HMC on Monday afternoon said Guba isn’t listed as a patient there.
A 69-year old Naalehu man, Robert Hayes, also arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and other offenses related to the stabbing. He since was released without being charged, pending further investigation.
