County, state announce park closures due to weather

Hawaii County announced Saturday the closure of all beach parks at midnight until further notice in anticipation of extreme weather.

High wind and high surf warnings will be in effect for East Hawaii from 4 a.m. Sunday to midnight Sunday.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says it is closing all West Hawaii parks at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Other closures include Waipio Valley to nonresidents, Bayfront Highway in Hilo, Namakani Paio campground, and the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa.

Hawaii County Civil Defense advises that residents secure loose objects, such as canopy tarps and yard furniture, that may be damaged or can cause damage to others.
