Wailoa Center’s Fountain Gallery during February will host art from the artists of the Art Day Group.
The Art Day Group was founded in 1992 by Sara Steiner-Jackson, Barry Wilkinson and the late MoonStar Rae.
“Some people go to church on Sundays, we go to Art Day on Fridays,” said Wilkinson.
Regulars attended have attended more than 1,000 sessions since 1997. They became a tradition in lower Puna at Ahalanui Park, where they met in the pavilion each week. Artists of all ages came and went and others stayed, faithfully.
They have exhibited together as a group many times and had an influence on each other’s artwork, like other groups have throughout art history. As they met in a public park, the group was open and visited by tourists and locals alike. Kids from the charter school next door came by at recess.
The Art Day Group has had an influence on many diverse lives and hoped that would continue, long into the future, by their youngest members. But the park is now gone, taken by the 2018 lava flows that reshaped lower Puna.
This group show will display artwork inspired by Ahalanui warm pond, the lower Puna District and the Art Day Group, which now meets at various places in the Puna community.
Member Ken Charon coordinated this exhibit and provided inspirational support and motivation for the group to continue.
There will be a reception to meet the artists from 5-7 p.m. Friday (Feb. 1). Light refreshments will be served.
Wailoa Center is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
