It wasn’t a good weekend for the UH-Hilo men’s and women’s basketball teams. Both lost a pair of games on Oahu.
For the men, Chaminade pulled away 114-101 on Saturday at McCabe Gym, after a 50-50 tie at halftime.
The Silverswords (4-0, 1-0 PacWest) opened the second half with a 31-8 run to go up 81-58 with 12:31 remaining.
The problem for UHH (2-2, 0-1) on Thursday in a loss at Hawaii Pacific was cold shooting, but two days later the Vulcans couldn’t stop anyone.
Coach GE Coleman lauaded Chaminade as the best offensive team in the PacWest heading into the game, and the Silverswords were as advertised with six players in double-digit scoring: Grant Dressler (21 points), Andre Arissol (21), Nick Anderson (19), Masa Swain (19), Jake Hutchings (14), and Tyler Cartaino (12). Chaminade shot 63 percent from the field, including 17 of 29 from long distance.
The Vulcans also had six players in double-digit scoring: Larry Bush (23 points), James Griffin (17) Kupaa Harrison (11), Jalen Thompson (11), Devin Johnson (11), and Cleo Cain (10). The offense converted 60 percent, including 16 of 27 from 3-point range.
During most games, UHH’s offensive output would have been enough, but not with Chaminade hitting 13 of 16 to open the second half.
It turned into the gym race that Coleman was trying to avoid.
The Vuls will look to get back on track Monday against Fresno Pacific (2-3, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at UHH gym. The Sunbirds beat HPU 67-54 on Saturday.
Women
• Chaminade 65, UHH 58: Allie Navarette scored 27 points on 10 of 22 shooting but couldn’t match the Silverswords’ better balance as Diamond Carter (16 points), Destiny Castro (13), and Jordyn Zader (12) scored in double-digits.
Mandi Kawaha scored 11 points and added five assists for the Vuls (2-2, 0-2), who have lost two straight and host Fresno Pacific (5-2, 1-1) on Monday at 5 p.m. HPU routed the Sunbirds 88-66 on Saturday.
Volleyball
Emily Wade, a 6-foot-4 middle, and Kendall Kott, a 6-foot setter, will join the Vulcans next fall.
Wade is from Sacramento, Calif, and was named the Capital Athletic League MVP, and Kott is from Shingle Spring, Calif., and is a two-time all-conference pick. Both play on the Synergy Force club in California.
