time changed
The starting time of Volcano Art Center’s 2018 Hula Voices series today at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village has changed to 5 p.m.
The program features special guest kumu hula Manaiakalani Kalua and moderator Desiree Moana Cruz.
Each month, Hula Voices presents an engaging, intimate talk-story session with Hawaii Island’s hula practitioners as they share their hula genealogy, traditions, protocols and experiences. These free, educational offerings occur regularly on the first Thursday of each month.
Jazz in the Forest concert canceled
Due to the volcanic conditions in the Volcano area, the Jazz in the Forest concert scheduled for Saturday at the Volcano Art Center has been canceled.
The music series, pending conditions, is scheduled to resume in August with Brazilian jazz rhythms featuring vocalist/trumpet player Andrea Lindborg and composer/pianist Loren Wilken accompanied by Jean Pierre Thoma and the Jazztones.

Italian buffet
to benefit KDEN
The public is invited to celebrate the Kilauea Drama and Entertainment Network’s 16th birthday from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Amalfatano’s Italian Restaurant, 400 Hualani St. in Hilo.
Tickets for the fundraising event are $20 and include an Italian buffet, a raffle for orchid plants and chocolate tortes, and a live auction for a dinner for six at a location of your choice.
KDEN’s next production, its annual summer musical “Oliver!” is scheduled for July 13-29, but because of the current closure of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it might not be staged at the Kilauea Theater at Kilauea Military Camp.
KDEN has a “Plan B” and will confirm the production’s location July 1.

Shakespeare play audition added
Hilo Community Players has scheduled another opportunity to audition for William Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” for 6 p.m. Friday in the rear (annex) building of the East Hawaii Cultural Center, 141 Kalakaua St. in Hilo.
“The Merry Wives of Windsor,” featuring one of the Bard’s best-known characters, Sir John Falstaff, is this summer’s offering for Shakespeare in the Park. In this comedy, Falstaff tries to romance two married women, who quickly catch on to his scheme and decide to turn the tables on him. In addition, one of the women has a daughter who has three suitors, each of whom is favored by a different person.
Actors and actresses attending the auditions should bring a monologue of about 20 lines and be prepared to read from the script as needed.
