Kenneth Douglas “Dougie” Benevides, 85, of Pepeekeo died Jan. 18 at a care home in Hilo. Born in Hilo, he was a retired lieutenant from the Hawaii Police Department, former member of the Hawaii Army National Guard and member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou and Aloha Council Boy Scouts of America. Private services held. No flowers; no koden (monetary gifts). Survived by wife, Helen Shirota-Benevides of Pepeekeo; brother, Raymond (Betty) Benevides of Hilo; sisters, Lucille Abrams of California and Isabelle Johansen of Hilo; sister-in-law, Rose Marie Ciaramitaro of California; nieces, nephews and cousins. Peter Groth Madsen, 87, of Kailua-Kona died Jan. 31 at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, he was a retired community college teacher. Private services. Survived by sons, Lars (Laurie Westrich) Madsen of Kealakekua and Anders (Claudia) Vonderhyde of Milford, Conn.; daughter, Michelle (Harland) Wake of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada; brother, Flemming (Hjordis) Madsen of San Francisco; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
