BIIF roundup: Waiakea edges Honokaa 49-48 in boys hoops

Will Soares scored 15 points, Noah Tominaga added 10 and Waiakea survived a late scare to hold on and beat Honokaa 49-48 on Thursday night in a matchup of reigning BIIF boys basketball champions at the Warriors’ gym.

Kamuela Spencer-Herring and Kolten Carvalho led the Dragons (0-1) with 13 points apiece. Trailing by three points, Honokaa inbounded the ball with five seconds remaining and presumably wanted a 3-pointer, but its shooter stepped inside the arc and made a two-pointer.

Kamehameha 53, Mid-Pacific 48: Nalu Kahapea scored 19 points, and Isaiah Nakoa-Oness added 13 as the Warriors used a big third quarter to win at Punahou’s tournament on Oahu.

The slow-starting Warriors trailed 29-23 at halftime before outscoring the Owls 23-4 during the next eight minutes,

On Wednesday, Kamehameha lost to a team from the mainland, while Hilo fell to Punahou.

Hilo boys, girls blank Keaau

Keaau kept it close, but Hilo’s boys got a goal in each half for a 2-0 victory Thursday in BIIF Division I soccer at the Cougars’ field.

Kahaku Tolentino-Perry and Kainalu Lewis scored for the Vikings (3-2), and Jyson Breitbarth collected the shutout against Keaau (1-3).

Girls

Hilo 9, Keaau 0: Kalamanamana Harman opened the scoring in the fifth minute, Haley Miyasato closed it in the 58th minute and Saydee Bacdad secured her fifth shutout of the season for the visiting Vikings.

Jordyn Pacheco tallied two goals and an assist for Hilo (5-1-1), Kiana Corpuz registered a goal and two assists and Alyeemomi Amaral and Glory Medeiros added a goal and an assist. Nanea Moke-Rabang and Paige Hiraki also scored, with Miya Clarke assisting on goals by Pacheco, Hiraki and Corpuz.

The Cougars fell to 2-3.

Jordyn Mantz scored 13 points Thursday as Kamehameha eased past Pahoa 38-19 in a BIIF Division II girls basketball game in Keaau.

Saydee Aganus and Hera Salmeron added six points apiece for the Warriors (2-0), which raced to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and held a 31-3 lead at the half.

Nanea Kaawaloa led the Daggers (1-4) with nine points.

Wednesday

Pahoa 40, Ka’u 37: Alyssa Padilla made three 3-pointers and scored 19 points, and the host Daggers held on for their first victory.

The Trojans dropped to 0-6 despite Kianie Mederios-Dancel’s 17 points.

Jescenia Tadeo-Jose added 10 points for Pahoa, which led 19-12 at the half.

Reishalyn Jara added seven points for Ka’u.

Waiakea 45, Honokaa 34: Kelsie Imai led the Warriors (5-0) with 15 points and Keeli-Jade Smith chipped in with 11.

The host Dragons fell to 2-1.

Konawaena 75, Keaau 34: Caiyle Kaupu (19 points), Mikayla Tablit (15 points on five 3-pointers), Cherilyn Molina (13) and Kawena Kaohimaunu (12, four 3-pointers) all scored in double figures in Kealakekua as the Wildcats (3-0) rolled.

The Cougars fell to 1-2.
