A high-surf warning will continue throughout today and the possibility of flooding has prompted the closure of a portion of Kalanianaole Avenue and some East Hawaii beach parks.
A high-surf warning will continue throughout today and the possibility of flooding has prompted the closure of a portion of Kalanianaole Avenue and some East Hawaii beach parks.
The warning, which is in effect for the north facing shores of Kohala, Hamakua and Hilo, forced the closure of Kalanianaole Avenue between Kolea and Oeoe streets until further notice, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
In addition, higher surf at three beach parks — Onekahakaha Beach Park, James Kealoha Beach Park and Richardson Ocean Park — has closed the parks to the public.
The warning is scheduled to last until 6 p.m. today and represents a high threat to life and property. The threat is most severe at high tide, approximately 6:30 a.m. today.
Oceanfront residents and beachgoers along the affected shores are advised to be alert for high and dangerous surf. Boat owners and oceanfront residents should take action to secure their property if they have not done so already.
In addition, Maunakea Access Road was closed to the public Wednesday because of high winds and below freezing temperatures. Winds are expected to be more moderate for the remainder of the week.
