The body of 61-year-old George Novinger of Spring Valley, Calif., hasn’t been found. His 62-year-old wife, Gladys, was found unresponsive at the bottom of the falls and later died at Hilo Medical Center.
“We won’t go out (to search) again unless we get specific information,” said Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Darwin Okinaka.
Police say the vacationing couple, owners of a hacienda-style resort and vineyard in suburban San Diego, was taken under by the current while trying to cross the rain-swollen river about 100 yards above the falls early Saturday afternoon.
