A mild inconvenience for Hilo commuters will soon be no more, as the ongoing resurfacing project on Waianuenue Avenue will end early next week.
Barett Otani, information and education specialist for the Hawaii County Department of Public Works, said the project, which began Nov. 13, likely will end Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
The project entails a resurfacing of Waianuenue from Kamehameha Avenue to Kaiulani Street as a short-term solution to the deteriorated road surface.
Otani said construction crews have completed work from Kamehameha Avenue to Kapiolani Street, with the final section to be finished Monday, weather permitting.
Despite heavy rains Wednesday and Thursday that prevented work, the project will end ahead of schedule, as Otani’s initial estimate placed its end date at Nov. 22.
“I guess if it hadn’t rained, it would have been done today,” Otani said Friday.
A future phase of resurfacing, from Kaiulani Street to Kaumana Drive, has no planned schedule yet, Otani said.
However, Otani urged drivers to remain cautious as delays continue throughout the final stages of construction.
