Casey Kishimori, 16, of Boy Scout Troop 23 was presented the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank of Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor in August at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin’s Sangha Hall.
The Hilo Betsuin is the sponsor of Troop 23.
Fewer than 4 percent of all Scouts in the U.S. reach the coveted Eagle rank since the inception of the Boy Scouting program in 1912.
An Eagle Scout “exhibits superior leadership qualities and selfless behavior toward others. He must be prepared to meet the challenges of the future and serve as an exemplary leader.”
Kishimori’s Eagle Scout service project consisted of constructing and installing three park-style wooden benches at Hilo Intermediate School that are now well-used by students. The project was completed with the assistance of fellow Scouts and parents who helped cut, sand, paint, assemble and install the benches on a Saturday.
Kishimori is a senior at Hilo High School. As a member of the Civil Air Patrol Lyman Field Composite Squadron, he attained the rank of second lieutenant and received the General Billy Mitchell Award, which requires passing examinations in leadership, aerospace dimensions and physical fitness.
Kishimori aspires to pursue a career in aviation. He is the son of Kurt and Sandee Kishimori of Hilo.
