Fernanda downgraded to tropical storm

A combination of cooler water and wind shear has taken its toll on Fernanda, which has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph as of 5 a.m. Thursday.

It’s forecast to weaken to a tropical depression this weekend and pass Hawaii Island to the north.

Meanwhile, farther to the east, Tropical Storm Greg is forecast to become a hurricane Saturday before weakening back to a tropical storm by Monday.
