Tribune-Herald Athlete of the Week: Hilo youth baseball player Mason Hirata

Whether it be at a PONY Mustang tournament in Hilo in 2014 (above photo), or on Maui in Bronco play this year (right), Hirata has long been one of coach Shon Malani’s team leaders.

He can play shortstop and handle the bat, too.

In the championship game of the ages 11-12 sectional Sunday, Hirata homered twice among his five hits to pace Hilo to a 24-3 victory.
