Police arrest 27 for DUI

During the week of May 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

During the week of May 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; South Hilo, seven; Puna, five; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 475 DUI arrests compared with 440 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 549 major accidents so far this year compared with 576 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

To date, there have been 16 official traffic fatalities compared with 10 at the same time last year. This represents a 60 percent increase in official fatalities. There also have been three vehicle-related fatalities this year police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the third in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
