During the week of May 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 11; Kona, four; and Puna, three.
So far this year, there have been 418 DUI arrests compared with 384 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.85 percent.
There have been 495 major accidents so far this year compared with 521 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.25 percent.
To date, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities, the same as for this time last year. There also have been three vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total, two because they occurred on private property and the third inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
