Elvis will be in the house!
Hey, all you greasers, cool cats and kittens. Dust off your saddle shoes, pull on your leather jackets and twirl those poodle skirts for 1950s Dance Night from 7-10 p.m. Saturday at the Hilo Elks Lodge.
In addition to a swing dance lesson, games and contests, the “King of Rock ’n’ Roll,” in the form of Big Island entertainer and recording artist Dan Nix, will perform a set of songs in tribute to Elvis Presley.
Come dressed in ’50s attire and compete for prizes. Dance music throughout the night will evoke the early days of rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly and doo-wop. No partner or experience is needed for the swing dance lesson.
Throughout the evening there will be fun and games such as hula hoop and bubble gum-blowing contests. Everyone will have the chance to learn and dance the stroll, featured in the iconic film, “American Graffiti.”
The 1950s party is sponsored by the Hilo Hep Cats swing dancers. The Hilo Elks is a private club, but everyone is welcome to attend as guests of A. Gill. Entry is $8-$15 sliding scale (pay what’s right for you). The evening starts with a beginner-friendly dance lesson followed by the dance party. The Hilo Elks Lodge, a nonsmoking venue, is at 150 Kinoole St. in downtown Hilo, with ample parking in the rear off Ululani Street.
