Kobie Kinzie and Jai Cabatbat hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth to provide the go-ahead run, and Kamehameha came back Monday to avoid a BIIF baseball upset bid by Hawaii Prep, winning 6-5 in Waimea.
Justyce Ishii pitched 3 1/3 strong inning of relief to get the win for the Warriors, who trailed 4-0 after one inning. Kyran Kai earned the save.
Jonah Hurney led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Skylar Roque-Sunahara’s hit. Kala Thurston’s double made the score 2-0, and he came home on Sheldon Aribal’s single to center. Another run scored on a passed ball.
Kamehameha got a run back on the second on a Bryce Furuli single that scored Dustin Asuncion, who reached on an error, and it tied the score with three more runs in the third, loading the bases on three walks. Bula Ahuna brought a run in with sacrifice fly, and Asuncion (3 for 3) added a run-scoring single.
Two more walks in the fourth allowed the Warriors to take the lead when Cabatbat was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but HPA evened the score in is half of the fourth as Michael Hughes led off with single, stole second and scored on a hit by Kaito Iida (2 for 3).
That was the only run allowed by Ishii, who struck out two in relief of Braeden Coloma.
Aribal took the loss in relief in relief of Hurney, despite allowing only a run in four innings with three strikeouts.
Hilo 7, Kealakehe 0
Toa Barclay, Briden Silva and Ocean Gabonia combined to hold the Waveriders to three hits at Wong Stadium, and Nick Antony was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI single for the Vikings, who have allowed one run in going 3-0.
Hilo collected 13 hits. Pu’ukani De Sa was 2 for 3, including a run-scoring double, and Stone Miyao and Joey Jarneski each finished with two hits.
Aiden AhHee was the losing pitcher for Kealakehe (1-2), allowing nine hits and six runs – four earned – and two walks in three innings.
Barclay went four innings, scattering two hits and two walks. Silva struck out two in one inning, allowing a hit, and Gabonia pitched two spotless innings.
Waiakea 16, Keaau 0
Waiakea scored 10 runs in the first inning to put visiting Keaau away early. The Warriors managed to score 16 runs on only eight hits, thanks to five errors by the Cougars.
Trayden Tamiya and Brett Fujii led the Waiakea offense with two hits apiece. Tamiya was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Fujii went 2-for-2 with three runs and one RBI. Tamiya also had two stolen bases.
On the hill, Cody Hirata and Khaden Victorino combined for the shutout win. Victorino was credited with the victory, throwing three innings, while allowing only one hit and walking one. He struck out three. Hirata threw one inning, striking out two.
Ricky Rapoza took the loss for Keaau. He threw only a third of an inning, allowing four unearned runs, while walking one. Bryant Respicio-Mercado picked up the lone Cougar hit.
Konawaena 11, Kohala 0
Vohn Yamaguchi Yamaguchi was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. He had one extra base hit, while also swiping two bases.
Leadoff hitter Andrew Udac and middle of the order batter Kanai Rivera also picked up multiple hits, showing that Konawaena batters can hit up and down the lineup.
AJ Allred picked up the victory on the hill. Allred started the game, throwing two innings, while allowing one hit and walking one. He also struck out a batter. Boaz Ayers entered in relief in the third inning, throwing the final three innings. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
Softball
Konawaena 13, Hawaii Prep 0
Andi Uemura pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts and Teizha Kaluna hit a three-run home run as the Wildcats won a five-inning TKO in Waimea.
A year after missing the state tournament for the first time since 2012, Konawaena is off to a 4-0 start.
Kaluna also tripled and singled, driving in four runs, and Sierra Amor was 2 for 3.
Hillary Connors was the losing pitcher for Ka Makani (1-4), and finished with two hits at the plate.
Uemura only walked one batter.
