A sea cliff collapse where lava continues to enter the ocean in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park could be imminent as a large crack continues to widen.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the crack located 16 to 33 feet inland from the Kamokuna ocean entry was more than 2.5 feet wide Wednesday with the ground moving slightly.
“These signs obviously suggest major instability in the sea cliff around the ocean entry, and that block of sea cliff could collapse at any time,” HVO said in a Thursday morning update.
A collapse of 100 feet of the cliff area could create large waves and shower the area with blocks of lava and hot fragments.
Thermal images show high temperatures in the crack running parallel to the ocean entry.
