Hilo residents wanting to dispose of their unwanted — but still usable — household items soon will have another option.
Hawaii County recently awarded a $186,490 contract to build a reuse center at the Hilo landfill.
Greg Goodale, solid waste division chief, said construction should begin shortly and could take about three months to complete.
The construction contract was awarded to Hoomaka Contracting LLC, but the center, located near the recycling facility, will be operated by Recycle Hawaii.
Goodale said similar reuse centers are available at some transfer stations around Hawaii Island, including those in Keaau, Pahoa, Waimea and Keauhou.
“Hilo, we believe, will be a pretty popular one,” he said.
The reuse centers typically see clothes, kitchen items, furniture and books available, Goodale said.
He said items that are donated are resold at a reasonable price.
Goodale said the reuse centers help the county cut down on trash going into the landfill.
