Palm society offering seedlings
In celebration of Hawaii’s Arbor Day, the Hawaii Island Palm Society will be giving away 100 native Pritchardia, (loulu) palm seedlings from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at Panaewa Zoo.
Members will be in the small pavilion at the zoo’s front entrance. There is a limit of one palm per family.
The society, well-known for its summer palm garden tours and promoting native and cultivated palms in landscape, will be offering a guided tour of the zoo’s mature palm collection at 11 a.m. HIPS began planting palms at the zoo more than 30 years ago and continues to bear the costs to maintain and fertilize this extensive collection for the community’s enjoyment.
This year HIPS began installing new signage enabling visitors to easily identify the palms. HIPS also provides a free map of the palm collection, available at the zoo’s gift shop. For additional details about this event, visit www.hawaiiislandpalmsociety.com or call 333-5626.
