Effective Aug. 1, walk-in service hours at the Department of Taxation’s Kona office are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Telephone calls will continue to be taken 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Because of the small number of staff in the Kona office, adjusting the walk-in service hours will help the Kona staff provide better overall service to all Kona taxpayers.
Changes to the walk-in service hours are needed to ensure documents received that day can be timely processed, according to department administration.
Cooper Center to close temporarily
The Cooper Center in Volcano will be closed temporarily Monday through Friday, Aug. 29-Sept. 2, for roof repairs, weather pending.
There will be no classes or meetings, no hours for the bookstore or thrift shop and the center will not be able to accept donations during the closure. The playground and picnic tables at the end of the parking lot also will be unavailable during this time.
The only access will be the exit driveway. Caution tape and construction zone signs will be posted.

New youth baseball team forming in Pahoa
A new youth baseball team is being formed in Pahoa for children ages 8-10. Experience is preferred, but not necessary.

Two from Big Island ordained through HNOH
Hoomana Naauao o Hawaii, the first independent Hawaiian Christian organization in the Islands, announced na ha’i euanelio (ministers) the Revs. Gladys Brigham and Piilani Kaawaloa were ordained during the recent Ahahui Euanelio Paeaina (General Assembly) at Ke Alaula oka Malamalama HNOH Church in Honolulu.
Brigham and Kaawaloa reside on the Big Island and are members of Ka Mauloa oka Malamalama HNOH Church in Kurtistown.
HPA Community Book Club meets on Aug. 25
The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Community Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 in the Ko Kakou Student Union at the Upper School campus.
Meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and participants are invited to bring a snack to share.
Lois Inman, Dyer Memorial librarian, and Jaime Johnson, Upper School English teacher, will lead the group. The current book selection is Los Angeles Times best-seller “My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante, one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors.

Free qigong lecture slated
Under the sponsorship of HiQi4health, Dr. Liu Ya Fei will present a free public lecture on Inner Nourishing Qigong, a medical qigong with a 450-year-old legacy.
The lecture will introduce the health benefits of this practice and is planned for 7 p.m. Monday (Aug. 22) in the University of Hawaii at Hilo University Campus Board Room 100.
Master Liu Ya Fei is a seventh-generation successor qigong master and traditional Chinese medicine physician from the National Beidaihe Medical Qigong Hospital and Training Base in China. Her father is Dr. Liu Guizhen, who is known as one of the fathers of modern medical qigong.
She prescribes specific qigong forms to treat a variety of medical problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, digestive problems, as well as cancer.
