Tropic Care clinics scheduled

Tropic Care 2016 will offer free health care clinics for the community from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. May 31 through June 3 and 8:30-noon June 4 at Ka‘u High School and the Ocean View Community Center, and 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. June 7-10 and 8:30 a.m.-noon June 11 at Keaau High School.

Health care services will include physical exams, dentistry, optometry, medication review and nutrition education.

Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis and are asked to bring a snack and water while waiting their turn in addition to eyeglasses and medications.

Tropic Care 2016 is a partnership between the Department of Defense and the Hawaii District Health Office, and supported by the County of Hawaii, Ka‘u Rural Health Community Association and numerous community partners and nonprofits.

HPA graduation ceremonies Friday

Commencement ceremonies for Hawaii Preparatory Academy take place at 10 a.m. Friday (May 27) in Castle Gymnasium at the school’s Upper Campus.

The ceremony is open to the public.

Ninety-seven graduating seniors will take part in the program. Head of School Robert McKendry will preside. Lindsay Barnes Jr., who retired as HPA’s headmaster in June 2015, will deliver the commencement address.

Rotary inducts new member

The Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset recently inducted its newest member, Josh Masi, manager of Pahoa Feed and Fertilizer Store.

The Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset meets at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday at Akebono Theater adjacent to Luquin’s Mexican Restaurant in downtown Pahoa.

Carriage driving event scheduled

The Hawaii Carriage Driving Society is sponsoring a carriage driving show/competition starting at 9 a.m. June 4 at the Panaewa Equestrian Center in Hilo.

Admission is free.

The judge is Crosby Reed, an accomplished carriage driver and horse trainer from North Carolina. Reed will be on the Big Island for at total of two weeks.

She will be available for private and group lessons in all aspects of carriage driving, basic horsemanship and horse training, as well as English and Western horse showing.
