Summer reading programs kick off June 4

“READ. MOVE. GET FIT!,” the Hawaii State Public Library System’s 2016 Summer Reading Kick-off Event, is slated for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. June 4 at the Hawaii State Library in Honolulu.

The event will feature Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi’s Reading Adventure, with guest readers including Auli‘i Cravalho, voice of Moana in the upcoming Walt Disney feature “Moana,” and Clyde Aikau, Quicksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Surfing champion and inspirational educator.

All 50 of the state’s libraries, including those here on the Big Island, participate in the Summer Reading Program.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Readers of all ages can participate in the Summer Reading Program from June 5-July 16. Registration for the free six-week program begins May 31.

Participants are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes a day during the program. Weekly incentives will be provided for their reading effort, which include a Marcus Mariota “READ” Poster, while supplies last.

New this year, participants who complete four or more weeks will receive a free book.

The state library system is grateful to Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation for making a donation of Leap Frog books for participating children from babies to grade 5.

In addition, the program features drawings for prizes and performances by artists from the University of Hawaii’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program.
