During the week of April 11-17, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence. Eight were involved in traffic crashes; two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Puna, nine.
• Kona, seven.
• South Hilo, five.
• South Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 323 DUI arrests compared to 279 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent.
There have been 421 major accidents so far this year compared to 447 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year. That represents an increase of 28.6 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
