Housing preservation repair funding available

Hale Aloha O Hilo Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for the Rural Housing Preservation Program in which 0 percent interest loans are available to repair dilapidated rural homes.

Applicants must live in a rural area (everything outside of Hilo), have owned and occupied the home for at least one year before applying, have clear title, acceptable credit, income and assets not exceeding program guidelines and qualify to repay the no-interest loan in 20 years. Applicants also must have sufficient equity in the property to cover the cost of repairs.

Homes also must be in need of repairs, be overcrowded (as defined by HUD) or in need of accessibility improvements for a handicapped family member. Projects typically correct leaky roofs, leaky plumbing, foundation and electrical hazards, wood-rot and insect damage. Faults in catchment systems also are eligible for repairs.

Repairs are performed by a licensed general contractor hired by the homeowner. Loans are secured by a mortgage and promissory note with 20 years to repay.
