Hawaii County parks officials plan to finalize a $3.36 million contract for the construction of new ball fields along Kamehameha Avenue after receiving a special management use permit Thursday.
The 9-acre park will include two ball fields on the makai side of the Ho‘olulu recreational complex.
The Windward Planning Commission voted 6-0 to grant the permit needed for the project to move forward. The Department of Parks and Recreation will next sign the construction contract with Isemoto Contracting, said James Komata, deputy parks director.
He said he couldn’t offer a timeline yet for when the work would get underway.
Isemoto’s bid included two additives, among them fencing for the new park. The base bid was $2.07 million, nearly double the county’s estimate of $1.125 million.
The future park sits on state land bordered by Kamehameha Avenue and Manono and Kuawa streets. The state will transfer the property to the county through an executive order, according to an environmental assessment.
The contract will cover the project’s first phase, which will mainly involve construction of the two fields capable of hosting football, soccer, rugby, baseball, softball and youth soccer events.
Soil with elevated levels of arsenic and lead will be capped.
Future phases would add lighting, roofs for bleachers, trails, a playground, bathrooms, a concession area, and a cultural interpretive site.
