A woman was found dead Monday morning after apparently being struck by a vehicle on Highway 130 near Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Police say the unidentified woman, described as a local female between 25 and 30 years old, was found deceased on the shoulder after a 22-year-old Hilo man reported he might have been involved in a traffic wreck at that location.

The man, who was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger pick-up, made the report at 1 a.m. at the Hilo police station.

The woman appeared to be walking toward Pahoa on the mauka shoulder of the road near Kaloli Drive when the collision occurred, police say.

She was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information regarding this case or the identity of the victim is asked to call Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

This is the sixth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to five at the same time last year, according to police.
