The Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association Shinnen Enkai (New Year’s) luncheon and general membership meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 31 at Sangha Hall.
The theme is “Embrace Change: New Vision … Create Engagement.”
The guest speaker is 18-year-old Cristina Jervais, who was one of two students selected by the state Buddhist Women’s Association to go to Japan in 2014 as an exchange student. She will share her experiences and observations.
In 2010, Jervais graduated from the Hilo Hongwanji Gakuen with honors. She has been an active Young Buddhist Association member for almost five years and is the Hilo unit president. Home-schooled and tutored, she now is a freshman at the University of Hawaii at Hilo majoring in linguistics.
Jervais is the eldest in her family and has three sisters and two brothers who all attend Dharma School. Isabel Jervais is their mother.
Entertainment will be provided by temple members Quince Mento, Zoi Nakamura, Aki Baba, BJ Soriano and Patti Taira.
Tickets are available at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo office until Jan. 10. The cost is $5 for BWA members and for $10 nonmembers.
