HONOLULU — Kenny Potter accounted for five total touchdowns, all in the first half, to lead San Jose State past Hawaii 42-23 on Saturday night.
The Rainbow Warriors’ ninth consecutive loss was only witnessed by 11,625 fans, according to the radio and television broadcasts, the lowest crowd recorded for a game since Aloha Stadium opened in 1976.
Potter completed 23 of 32 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 54 yards and two scores. Tyler Ervin ran for 114 yards and a score and added six receptions for 62 yards for San Jose State (5-6, 4-3 Mountain West).
The Spartans scored touchdowns on each of their first six drives to take a 42-7 lead midway through the third quarter. They had 344 total yards — averaging 8.6 yards per play — and were 7 of 7 on third-down conversions in the first half.
Paul Harris had 179 yards rushing and a touchdown for Hawaii (2-10, 0-8). Devan Stubblefield had three receptions for 101 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown.
