The Hawaii Island HIV/AIDS Foundation in partnership with Church of the Holy Apostles will host a memorial and celebration service for World AIDS Day at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the church, 1407 Kapiolani St. in Hilo.
The service will include stories, music, a candle offering ceremony and offerings of remembrance to be placed on memorial trees. After the service, guests are invited to stay for food and refreshments and walk the church’s meditative labyrinth.
World AIDS Day is observed on Dec. 1 each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in harmony to show their support for people living with HIV and commemorate people who have died.
“It’s an important opportunity for us to get together as a community, to open our hearts to one another and feel the presence of love in our lives amidst stories of hardships and triumphs,” said Church of the Holy Apostles Rector the Rev. Moki Hino.
Noted soprano Amy Horst will be the featured soloist at the service along with organist Rick Mazurowski and music offerings from Matthew Kamelamela.
“World AIDS Day gives us the opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS, show their support for people living with this virus and to honor people who have passed away from this devastating disease,” said HIHAF Benefits Specialist Cindy Medeiros. “It allows people to reflect on the fact that HIV and AIDS are still very real and that they continue to affect everyone. HIV does not discriminate.”
