For 32 years, Hospice of Hilo has served the hospice, palliative care and bereavement care needs of the east and south portions of Hawaii Island. For 25 of those years, Hospice of Hilo CEO Brenda S. Ho has been with the organization.
“It’s truly amazing how quickly time flies. I am continually grateful to be able to serve the community through Hospice of Hilo,” Ho said.
Ho first came on board with Hospice of Hilo as the organization’s assistant executive director under then-executive director Shigeko Chang. Under Ho’s leadership, Hospice of Hilo has grown from a small four staff operation working out of an old cottage off Waianuenue Avenue to a Medicare-certified organization with more than 200 staff members and volunteers, an office complex and the 14,140-square-foot Pohai Malama a Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Inpatient Care Center, the first one of its kind on a Neighbor Island.
“Brenda has been a visionary, always looking for a way to expand services and reach more people,” said Shirley Dellinger, Hospice of Hilo director of operations and compliance. “The Pohai Malama Care Center is an example of her visionary ability to see beyond today.
“Her drive to take things to the next level and perseverance to keep going has brought to fruition many of the programs Hospice of Hilo has today.”
