Hilo Toastmasters compete in Waimea
Jean Wence and Kim Pierce will represent the Hilo Toastmasters Club at the organization’s Area Contest on Saturday in Waimea.
Wence took first place in the Humorous category with her speech titled “Try Something New and Different.”
Pierce placed first in the Evaluation category.
Hilo club alternates, if necessary, are NJ Moses (Humorous) and Kathy Emery (Evaluation).
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs.

Stress reduction series returns
The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo announces the return of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction series.
Bernie Schreck, MA, will lead the series.
Classes are scheduled for 1-5:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 19 and Nov. 7 and 21. There will be a retreat day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 14.
Classes will be conducted in UH-Hilo’s Science and Technology Building, Room 226.
The cost is $150 and there is a book requirement.
The in-depth program will help participants manage the symptoms of stress, chronic illness or pain, and improve their quality of life through diverse techniques such as guided meditation, gentle, mindful yoga and breathing exercises.
