HONOLULU (AP) — A strong El Niño means storm preparation for most Hawaii residents, but for some business owners the inclement weather isn’t all bad news.
El Niño brings more waves and sometimes larger ones, and that’s a boon for surf businesses.
Todd Pinder has shaped surfboards for more than a decade and says demand for big wave boards doubles or nearly triples when El Niño arrives.
The weather system occurs sporadically and can last anywhere from six months to four years. Some surfboard companies stock up early in anticipation of El Niño’s waves.
It’s not just smaller manufacturers such as Pinder noticing the boom in business. Larry Yepes, with Town and Country Surf in Honolulu, said business has picked up as storm warnings keep coming.
