Hilo High School’s ongoing efforts to promote awareness, acceptance and respect for students with intellectual disabilities were highlighted during the annual Special Olympics Track and Field Area Games on April 25 at Keaau High School.
Hilo High not only represented its sporting events well, but the more important message was the school’s attempt to show support for its fellow peers.
Hilo High’s Key and Leo clubs volunteered and cheered on their Special Olympic athletes, while general education unified partners competed with their Special Olympic athletes in the 4×100 meters and 4×400 meters relay races.
Hilo High Special Olympic athletes, along with their general education partners, also will compete in the HHSAA track competition this year against other unified teams across the state as a way to showcase this unique collaboration.
