HONOLULU (AP) — A private Honolulu garden plans to start charging admission next month to offset rising costs.
Moanalua Gardens will charge adult Hawaii residents and military personnel $1 to enter. Adult non-residents will pay $3. Admission will be free for children 12 and under.
Owner John Damon says the park has been operating at a loss for seven years. He says efforts to raise revenue haven’t generated enough funds to cover rising operational and maintenance costs.
He also plans to restore and renovate an historic summer cottage built the 1850s by Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, who would later become King Kamehameha V.
The park is popular with local residents and travelers. Many Japanese visit to see a large monkeypod tree that has been featured in iconic Hitachi Ltd. commercials in Japan.
