HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Authorities in Guam have taken possession of live ammunition, grenades and mortar rounds found by two young hikers.
The hikers found the ordnance Monday at Mount Santa Rosa in Yigo and took it to one of their homes nearby. That led to the evacuation of the home after the father of one of the hikers called 911, Guam newspaper Pacific Daily News reported (http://is.gd/SFYDlF ).
Members of the 36th Civil Engineer Squadron from Andersen Air Force Base responded to the call, along with the Guam Fire Department. Tech Sgt. Sean Rabourn, among the responders, said all the ordnance that was found turned out to be live.
“They’re all things you wouldn’t want to touch,” he said.
People should stay away from any possible ordnance and notify authorities instead, said Guam fire Capt. Ray Garrido.
“You don’t know whether it’s a live ordnance,” he said.
One of the hikers, 9-year-old Gabrile Farreira, said he and 19-year-old Anseto Mony were hiking near Farreira’s home when they found the ordnance sticking out of the ground. The boy said they’ve hiked that area before and found other artifacts there.
Farreira said he and Mony took ordnance thinking the items would make good souvenirs. His father, Kurt Farreira, said the smaller rounds looked more like artifacts, but an 81 mm mortar round that measured about 1 1/2 feet looked like it could do some damage. That’s when he decided to call authorities.
Air Force personnel removed the ordnance from the scene without incident.
