HONOLULU (AP) — The state has agreed to pay $350,000 to settle a lawsuit by group of residents of a Honolulu public housing project over unsanitary conditions.
The 2011 lawsuit said residents at Mayor Wright Homes suffered from a lack of hot water, vermin infestations, gaping holes in walls and inconsistent security.
Attorneys for the group announced the settlement Tuesday, saying both sides agreed to it last year but the agreement recently received court approval.
Attorney Gavin Thornton says most of the money will be distributed among about 400 households.
The state spent more than $4.5 million making improvements at Mayor Wright.
Hawaii Public Housing Authority Executive Director Hakim Ouansafi says even though conditions at the housing project have improved, it was in the best interest of tenants and taxpayers to settle.
