The Arc of Hilo is pleased to announce the receipt of an $8,500 grant from the Quality of Life Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.
The use of assistive technology for persons with disabilities has made great strides in the last few years, and many physical challenges now can be overcome. The goal of this program is to enhance the lives of Arc of Hilo clients with disabilities by participating in an activity that brings them closer to a healthier lifestyle, and overcoming fears and obstacles through an active and enjoyable water experience.
The assistive water devices, which will be used in The Arc’s new aquatic program, include a Mobi-Chair, an amphibious rolling beach chair, that provides a seamless transition from sand to water; a Mobi-Mat, which is a portable wheelchair pathway; and several snorkeling kickboards with built-in viewing windows and a ventilated neoprene “dry mask” that blocks out ambient light for a clear view of ocean life.
Other devices such as floating foam swim collars, life vests and the Aqua Float Water Walker can be used in the pool as well as in the ocean.
“We are very excited to begin this aquatic program because these activities bring joy to so many individuals, regardless of their physical challenges,” said Shelagh Arruda, Arc of Hilo client support services coordinator. “Our adult day health program clients are ready and waiting for the first excursion.”
Arc of Hilo says “Mahalo” to the Quality of Life Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation for inspiring the spirit of giving and for investing in people and solutions that benefit this special island population.
