Glass installation artist Darren Goodman is doing live hot glass demonstrations at the Volcano Art Center Gallery this month. Goodman creates pieces with recycled glass from his portable glass furnace.
The final demonstrations at the gallery are slated for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today and Saturday. These demonstrations are free and open to the public. Park entrance fees may apply.
Next week, Goodman will create a glass installation in the gallery.
Inspired by the 1877 Volcano House hotel building that now houses VAC’s gallery and by Pele’s tears, Goodman will create his own tear-shaped glass. Speed plays a vital role in the execution of Goodman’s “Pele’s Tears.” The forms are blown quickly with walls so thin they don’t need to be annealed, but cool slowly enough to prevent shattering.
Originally from Maineville, Ohio, Goodman’s “Glass Experience” (www.glassexperience.com) performance events combine his musical and glassblowing talents into an interactive production that has been shared with people around the world. Through the common theme of team work through glassblowing, he translates the potential of working together into everyday life.
