During the week of Nov. 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Kona, 7; Puna, 6, South Kohala, 4; and Ka‘u, 1.
So far this year, there have been 1,002 DUI arrests compared to 1,130 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.3 percent.
There have been 1,339 major accidents so far this year compared toh 1,167 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 official traffic fatalities compared to 23 during the same period last year, a decrease of 52.2 percent.
To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
