‘Conquering the Sun’ auditions scheduled for Sept. 15-16

Auditions for the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Art Center’s fall production of Conquering the Sun will be held from 7-9 p.m.on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16, on PAC center stage. Auditions are open to college students and community members.

“Conquering the Sun” is the story of the Hawaiian demigod Maui and his journey to slow the sun from crossing the sky so quickly. The play touches on various other Hawaiian myths and teaches the important lesson that working together is often more effective than working alone.

UH-Hilo Performing Arts graduate Kimo Apaka debuts as the director of the small ensemble cast. The play was created by UH-Hilo’s Jackie Pualani Johnson and members of the Colorado Caravan at the University of Colorado in 1976.

The audition will include cold readings, improvisational exercises, creating different characters, and showing special skills, particularly things of, but not restricted to, Hawaiian culture such as hula, Hawaiian chant, ukulele, and blowing a conch shell. Everyone is urged to come dressed to move and be willing to have fun. Performances will be held during the second week of November. Those interested in auditioning should be available for mid-morning performances for school children during that week.
