HONOLULU (AP) — The body of a 17-year-old Moanalua High School student was recovered from Kapena Falls.
Seven to 10 students Monday traveled to the falls in Nuuanu off the Pali Highway, arriving just before 10 a.m. Monday. A boy in the party told other students he wanted to find a restroom. He left and did not return.
After about an hour, others in the group called parents and then emergency officials.
Divers after 3 p.m. found the boy’s body at the bottom of the pond below the falls.
Honolulu Fire Department Battalion Chief John Bowers says witnesses don’t know if he jumped into the pond or fell.
People often jump into the deep water from rocks above.
An autopsy has been ordered.
