Keaukaha Elementary School hosted its first-ever Kuhio Day celebration, “E Ola Na Ali‘i — ‘Long Live the Chiefs.’”
Students, staff, families and community members paid tribute to Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole on March 25, and were joined by Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi and Hawaiian Homelands personnel, including Deputy Darrell Young from Oahu.
Students sang songs in honor of Prince Kuhio, draped leis over his portrait and shared their personal writing pieces of how Kuhio’s legacy impacted their lives as members of the Keaukaha community. Students learned Prince Kuhio was instrumental in the establishment of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920 and was responsible for the creation of the homestead lands known today as Keaukaha.
