The annual Japanese Culture Day was hosted at Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u on Oct. 25 as a part of its East Asian heritage language program to honor the multiple cultures of Hawaii. This event showcases the beauty of Japanese culture through various demonstrations and hands-on activities. This year’s demonstrations included aikido, bon dancing and kimono. Students also participated in workshops in calligraphy, musubi-making, origami and Japanese games. “My students look forward to this event to explore and experience Japanese traditions,” said Kumu Pilialoha Smith. “It provides a great opportunity for them to increase their awareness and understanding of Japanese culture!” Nawahi students try on “yukata (summer kimono)” at the Japanese Culture Day event.
