Better late than never for the University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball team.
Freshman Marley Strand-Nicolaisen smacked 16 kills Saturday in Honolulu and the Vulcans defeated Chaminade 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20, earning their first road win in what was their season finale.
“We finally played good on the road,” UHH coach Tino Reyes said.
The Vulcans (11-14, Pacific West Conference 6-14) snapped a three-match losing and finished in a tie for 10th in the 13-team PacWest.
Kim Spring compiled nine kills for the Silverswords (9-16, 6-14).
Women’s basketball
Kamilah Jackson flirted with a career high, scoring 30 points as the University of Hawaii downed Mississippi 79-63 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu.
Jackson, who scored 31 points in a game as a freshman in 2010, had the hot hand on the afternoon, finishing 11 of 13 from the floor and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line. With the effort, Jackson moved into sixth all-time on the UH scoring list with 1,267 points. She added 10 rebounds for her second double in as many nights.
The game was tied at the break, but Hawaii (3-1) shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half and used runs of 11-2 and 12-4 to pull away.
Shawna-Lei Kuehu added a career-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. UH outrebounded the Rebels 45-34.
Valencia McFarland led the way with 14 points for Ole Miss (1-3), which shot just 34.3 percent.
Hawaii (2-0) wrapped up the classic Sunday evevning against West Virginia (2-0).
• West Virginia 88, Washington State 66: Lia Galdeira (12 points) and Dawnyelle Awa (five) fell to 0-2 during their Hawaii homecoming. The weekend marks the Konawaena graduates’ first competitive action in Honolulu since they won their third Hawaii High School Athletic Association championship with the Wildcats in 2012.
Asya Bussie led all scorers with 25 for the Mountaineers (2-1). Tia Presley finished with 16 for Washington State, which closed out the tournament against Ole Miss on Sunday.
