HONOLULU — Christian Standhardinger and Keith Shamburger each scored 17 points to lead Hawaii to a 78-68 win over Western Michigan in a second-round game at the Rainbow Classic on Saturday.
The Rainbow Warriors (2-0) led by three, 39-36, at halftime and trailed by a point, 53-52, with 10:22 left to play.
Isaac Fotu scored six straight Hawaii points and Quincy Smith scored the next eight for a nine-point lead.
Fotu finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors, who won the past two Rainbow Classic championships and play former rival New Mexico State in the third game of the four-team, round-robin tournament Monday night. Smith added 13 points off the bench for Hawaii, which routed Tennessee State 85-55 in its opener Friday.
Kellen McCormick and David Brown each scored 14 points to lead the Broncos (1-1), with guard Jared Klein coming off the bench to add 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting.
Women’s volleyball: Emily Hartong compiled 24 kills and 10 digs, and Jade Vorster notched a season-high 11 kills and eclipsed 200 blocks for her career as the visiting Rainbow Wahine outlasted Cal Santa Barbara 22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12.
In avenging a five-set home loss earlier this season, No. 12 Hawaii (20-4, 9-3 Big West) stayed in contention for its 19th straight league title, moving into a second-place tie with the Gauchos (13-9, 8-2).
Freshman Nikki Taylor added 15 kills, including four that gave her team key points in the deciding set. Vorster had nine blocks and made only two errors on 18 swings as UH hit. 223.
Katey Thompson led the way with 12 kills for the Gauchos, who hit .148.
Combined with a sweep of Cal Poly on Friday night, UH did little to compromise its No. 16 ranking in the Ratings Percentage Index. Host bids are supposed to be offered to the tournament’s Top 16 seeds, which will be determined in part by RPI.
Women’s basketball: Nothing went right as Hawaii was routed 84-44 by Arizona State in the teams’ opener in Tempe, Ariz.
Led by Dej Mann’s 14 points, the Sun Devils pulled away early with a 10-0 run and shot 55.6 percent from the floor.
Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 15 points for Hawaii, which made only 6 of 23 shots in the first half and trailed by 26 at the break. The Wahine committed 26 turnovers.
