The public is invited to the Healing Field and Flags for Soldiers ceremony presented by the Exchange Club of Hilo at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Mooheau Park Bandstand in downtown Hilo.
Speakers will include Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and Lt. Col. Eric Schwedo, commander of the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area, and community leaders. The Kamehameha School Choir, Hawaii County Band and the Hilo High School ROTC will also be part of the ceremony.
The first Healing Field displayed 3,031 American flags to represent each victim of the attack on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and the United Airlines Flight 93 over Pennsylvania.
This was held at Sandy, Utah on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack.
The Exchange Club of Hilo last presented a Healing Field program in 2004. In the “Flags for Soldiers” element of the event, Exchange members will present American flags to active military personnel serving at home and abroad, or their family representatives, to show our country’s appreciation for their dedication and sacrifice.
The Healing Fields is a program of the National Exchange Clubs Americanism initiative of patriotism and community service.
“The Healing Field and Flags for Soldiers honors our men and women in the military, and honors the spirit of America,” said a spokesman.
