What would have been the outcome if the people of Virginia had had the option of voting on the issue of slavery at the end of the Civil War? Or the people of Alabama on the issue of civil rights? Remember when marriage between the races was illegal?
Sometimes the majority has to bow to the rights of the minority. Marriage should be the right of any person who is the age of consent.

I am writing in response to the letter written by Marie Ruhland (Tribune-Herald, Your Views, Nov. 5). I find her word “gayiage” offensive (and for the record, I am not gay). The Marriage Equality Act will allow all those who wish to marry the right to do so. It will NOT force someone who is not gay to marry someone who is. It will not affect your marriage in any way.
On the other hand, there have been people dragged/forced into “traditional” marriage. Arranged marriages, and “shotgun” weddings do this. There is no love, just pressure from outside forces.
Most of the people I know who are in same-sex relationships have been together longer than people in traditional relationships. They are committed to their partners, but because of small-minded people, they are not allowed the right to marry. They have to jump through all kinds of legal hoops just to be allowed to visit their partners in the hospital, or inherit if something happens to one of them.
How does their being allowed to marry change your life? IT DOESN’T. Your marriage will be the same. It will not take anything away from you if they marry.
And while we are on the subject, that weird commercial that has been running about “Let the people decide” is badly worded. It is a reflection on the people who irrationally believe that same-sex marriage will somehow affect their marriage. The line about how same-sex marriage will FORCE families to be destroyed is ludicrous! If an entire family can be destroyed because people who love each other get married, then your family has bigger issues than marriage equality.
If this goes to the people to vote, there will be more hate and fear-mongering by these same people who believe they should have rights others don’t.
Give equal rights to all. That is what this is about. Equal rights. I hope our state legislators will be strong and allow all citizens of our state equal rights.
